        Dodd Time Line  1771 - 2003

Either of these Thomas’ could be the father of Samuel Dodd.  Hopesay,  Burford and Hallow are all close enough together to make a case for this.  I prefer Thomas from Burford because his father is Edward Dodd and Thomas calls his second son Edward.  Burford is also closer to Dymock than the others. Because Thomas and Ann call their first son Samuel it could be presumed that her father was called Samuel. xxxxxxxxx

Preamble

When I decided eighteen years ago to look into researching the history of the Dodd/Thurston family I had no idea that I would be able to trace parts of the family back to the eighteenth century.  I managed to do this by searching church records and the census records from 1841 – 1901.  I was lucky in that they were not a family that moved too far in those early years.  Being from a rural background helped in this, as they seemed to be well established as tradesmen and agricultural labourers in the areas of Dymock and Thornbury.

The Thurston family had been in the Thornbury area since about 1000 having come from East Anglia. The Gloucester Record Office has numerous papers and records of the family from this time.  By the mid 1200’s a branch of the family were also well established at Oldbury-on-Severn.  I was interested in the name Anselm and it seems that this name entered the family when a Rose Thurston married an Anselm Nash at Thornbury in 1698.  Rose, born 1672, is most probably the sister of Daniel Thurston.  Daniel married Mary Marsh in 1705 and their first son was called Anselm.  This is the first time that the name appears in the family and it is used by the family right up until the late 1800’s.  I was lucky when researching the Thurstons to find on the internet a site that had the transcriptions of the Thornbury  parish registers. A great find and a wonderful source of potential relatives!  The site is called The Scribes Alcove.  I must admit that I rather like the Thurstons.  They must have been a close family as on several censuses I found nieces or nephews staying with aunts and uncles and married children living close by their parents.  Some were  agricultural labourers and others were carpenters, cordwainers (shoemakers), tailors etc.   On the 1951 census out great great-grandfather Anselm was able to read and write, so had obviously had some schooling.  Another Anselm, the uncle of the above died in the Thornbury Workhouse at the age of 73.  He had been an agricultural labourer, probably with a tied cottage that he had to vacate when he was unable to work.  Although a great many Thurston’s died quite young a great many also lived to a good age.

The Dodd family did not arrive in Dymock until after the marriage of Samuel Dodd to his first wife Charlotte Skipp in 1798.  It appears that Samuel’s brother Edward, who married Charlotte’s sister Catherine, also moved to Dymock at this time.  The brothers were born at Neen Sollars in Shropshire.  Dad always said that Dodd was a Shropshire name.  John Dodd the son of Samuel and his second wife Mary Ann Parry lived and died in Dymock and his son James, our great grandfather only moved out of Dymock to Bosbury after his marriage to Elizabeth Innes.  He most probably moved to get work, as like his father he was a wheelwright and it may have been that a village the size of Dymock could not support them both.  James died at  Bosbury but it appears that his widow and surviving children moved to Bristol.

Branches of the family including the Rodways and Hoopers who had been in Bristol for some years were more difficult to trace.  It appears that William Rodway moved to Bristol from his birthplace in Tirley at a fairly young age.  Maybe he resided in Winterbourne for a while, as Auntie Kay was sure that this is where the family came from.  I can find no evidence for this although there were several families of Rodways in Winterbourne during the nineteenth century.  The Hoopers were a family from the Barnstaple and Bideford areas of Devon.  Both Eliza Rodway’s grandfather and great grandfather were called John Hooper, both were carpenters and both came from Devon.
